A hidden gem in the northeast of Nepal, Helambu Trek is an exceptional trekking destination offering visitors a blend of cultural richness and natural beauty. Located just a few hours away from Kathmandu, it is one of the most easily accessible and doable treks in Nepal. Despite being less popular, Helambu is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and serene valleys, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Jugal Himal range and other snow-capped peaks.
Besides breathtaking mountain scenery, the trek offers a grand opportunity to experience the beautiful cultures of the Tamang, Hyolmo, and Sherpa communities. These ethnic groups add a rich cultural layer to the trek, as it is interesting to experience a diverse cultural spectrum of Nepal in a small setting. Moreover, the region is steeped in Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Along the trek, you’ll visit ancient monasteries and interact with locals to learn more about their traditional way of life in the remote mountains of Nepal.
Similarly, for anyone seeking solitude and wanting to experience local cultures, the Helambu Trek is an ideal choice. The trail sees few international visitors thus one can enjoy the tranquil beauty in peace. In addition, the highest point you will reach in this trek is Ama Yang Ri (3,771m) from where the all-encompassing view of Langtang range along with Dorje Lakpa, Jugal are visible. Stunning views are the constant highlight of the trek but the mountain view from Thadepati is simply jaw-dropping.

Despite its shorter duration, the trek is packed with highlights that leave a lasting impression, from the cultural richness to the breathtaking vistas of the Himalayan landscape.
Helambu Trek begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Upon landing, you’ll be greeted by Hike Holiday Treks representative who will assist you with your transfer to hotel. He provides a short briefing of your trekking to Helambu.
Next day our journey begins with a short drive of 1 hour to reach Sundarijal. From we start hike to Chisapani with ascending new heights after that we cross the village of Kutumsang. Leaving Kutumsang, you’ll continue our trek towards Thadepati, one of the highest points on this trek.
The first village is Melamchi Gaon, followed by Tarkeghyang, a larger town. This is where the trek’s cultural elements shine brightest. Discover the spiritually significant monasteries in Tarkeghyang. After that, you will trek to Ama Yangri, the most famous viewpoint in the Helambu region.
After there, you’ll descend to Sermathang, the last village in the Helambu region. Then you drive to Kathmandu and board your flight the next day, bringing this beautiful journey to a conclusion.
Your journey begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Upon landing, you’ll be greeted by our representative who will assist you with your transfer to the hotel. Once settled, you may spend the remaining day at your convenience.
We officially begin our journey with a short drive to Sundarijal, located on the outskirts of Kathmandu. Once you reach Sundarijal, we start our hiking journey through the lush forests of Shivapuri National Park. The park is a popular destination amongst day hikers so you will find a few hikers on the trail. After about 4 to 5 hours of hiking, you will reach Chisapani, a small village with stunning panoramic vistas of mountains such as Langtang, Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal, and more.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the Helambu region as you make your way from Chisapani to Kutumsang. The trail passes through dense forests, small villages, and open meadows, offering a mix of natural beauty and cultural encounters. As you trek, you’ll have the chance to observe the daily life of the local Tamang and Sherpa communities. The trail involves several ascents and descents, making it a moderately challenging day. After approximately 6-7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive in Kutumsang, a picturesque village with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Leaving Kutumsang, you’ll continue your trek towards Thadepati, one of the highest points on this trek. The trail gradually ascends through dense forests of rhododendrons and pine, offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere. As you climb higher, the landscape changes, with fewer trees and more open views of the surrounding peaks. The final stretch to Thadepati is steep, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. Thadepati is a small settlement located at a high ridge, providing an ideal spot to rest and take in the magnificent scenery.
Today’s trek involves a descent from Thadepati to the village of Tarkeghyang. The trail descends through rhododendron forests, crosses streams, and passes by small settlements. As you approach Tarkeghyang, you’ll notice the distinct architecture of the local homes, built in the traditional Helambu style with stone walls and wooden roofs. Tarkeghyang is one of the largest villages in the region and is home to beautiful monasteries.
Today is a special day as you trek to Ama Yang Ri, the highest point of the trek, offering one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Helambu region. The trail to Ama Yang Ri is challenging, with a steep ascent, but the effort is well worth it. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and even distant views of Mount Everest on a clear day. After spending some time at the summit, taking in the breathtaking views and capturing photos, you’ll descend to Tarkeghyang. The descent is easier, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery and reflect on the achievement of reaching the summit.
After a restful night in Tarkeghyang, you’ll continue your trek towards Shermathang. The trail is relatively easy and offers stunning views of the Himalayas, terraced fields, and lush forests. As you trek, you’ll pass through several small villages, each offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the local communities. Upon reaching Shermathang, you’ll be welcomed by the sight of traditional stone houses and a serene atmosphere. Shermathang is known for its beautiful monastery and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants.
Today, you will descend from Shermathang to Melamchi Pul Bazaar, a bustling market town located on the banks of the Melamchi River. Upon reaching Melamchi Pul Bazaar, you’ll board a vehicle to drive back to Kathmandu. The journey takes around 4-5 hours to reach Kathmandu. Once you arrive in the city, you’ll be transferred to your hotel.
In the evening, you’ll join the farewell dinner hosted by Hike Holiday Treks, where you’ll receive your achievement certificate in recognition of your journey
Your incredible journey comes to an end today. Depending on your flight schedule, a representative from our team will meet you at the hotel approx. 3 hours before your flight time to transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure. We will say our goodbyes and look forward to our next journey together in the Himalayas of Nepal.
