Driving from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, you are exposed to the outskirts of the city and start to notice thin habitat. We make our trail through Shivapuri National Park listening to the gushing rivers, and birds chirping. Traversing through the small parishes of Mulkharka, we reach another charming village of Chisapani. It is an easy ascend beside the pipeline to Sundarijal.
Chisapani gives you a glimpse into the life of people living so close to the city, yet so different.
At Chisapani all the villages of this journey share the same geographical trajectory as the capital city, yet the aura of the place is so different. You can see people engaging in farming and animal husbandry for their livelihood. As much as the journey is elevating because of cultural exposure, the scenic Himalayas add more beauty to this hike. The journey from Chisapani again takes the route through lush forests and ethnic villages until you reach the beautiful hill station of Bhaktapur. Enjoy the encompassing mountain vistas while sun rays disperse over the majestic Himalayan peaks of Nepal from the comfort of your hotel room.

An early morning trip to Sundarijal is a fantastic chance to catch glimpses of Nepal’s landscape; while driving, the breathtaking view of the Ganesh Himal will delight your eyes. The path to Sundarijal winds across hills covered with forest flora. Once you get at Sundarijal, you will rise to the Shivapuri National Park entrance via a stone-paved trail. The settlement features a temple devoted to the Hindu deity Sundarimai, after whom the village was named Sundarijal. The Bagmati River flows through the settlement, which is also known for canyoning. The other two rivers, Shyalmati and Bagmati, are located in the lower elevations. Sundarijal has few flat zones and is mostly covered by woods, hence it is predominantly hilly in terms of area coverage.
As you walk from Sundarijal to Shivapuri National Park, the natural splendour surrounding the trail appears alive, with wide-open views of sparkling mountains bursting up amongst the green hills. Shivapuri National Park, Nepal’s eighth national park, has an area of 159 square kilometres and is named after the Shivapuri Peak.
The Chisapani hiking trail through the park is ornamented with subtropical Himalayan woodlands and a variety of vascular and abundant flora. The national park’s fauna is diverse, including leopards, jungle cats, Himalayan black bears, and pangolins. The excursion to Chisapani, made even more magical by the magnificent views of the Annapurna Panorama, the Ganesh Himal, the Gaurishankar Range, and many more peaks, is worth celebrating.
The hike from Chisapani to Nagarkot will be even more enjoyable than the previous day, with breathtaking mountain views and a picturesque hilly landscape. The journey to Nagarkot from Chisapani will take you past more dense forests, vast woodlands, an army camp, and other small villages. The trail twists slightly upward and downward, and the rich foliage of the area provides a wonderful setting for the trip. Nagarkot is surrounded by dense forests and is situated in a lush green valley with numerous villages.
Nagarkot, located above the valley to the north of the city, is noted for its dawn vista in the Himalayas and is also known as the premier hill station of the Kathmandu Valley. The view from Nagarkot includes Mount Everest and several other peaks in eastern Nepal, as well as a panoramic vista of the Kathmandu valley and Shivapuri National Park. According to history, Nagarkot was an old fortress in the Kathmandu valley created to watch the exterior actions of other kingdoms due to its strategic location. Later, it became a royal family retreat before gaining popularity as an international hill station.
What distinguishes it is that it is the closest to Kathmandu and offers one of the best views of eight of Nepal’s thirteen Himalayan ranges. The Himalayan range consists of the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Everest, and Number ranges. When you arrive at your destination in the evening after a long day of walking, the vision of the sun gradually setting behind the hills and mountains will captivate your heart.
In the morning, when you wake up you will be able to notice the magnificent sunrise amidst the diamond mountain ranges from your hotel room. This is why Nagarkot has gained the title of best place to experience Himalayan views from hotel balconies without having to go through arduous rough trails. After breakfast, begins the trek back to Kathmandu.
